INTRODUCTORY REMARKS

In the first place, before choosing weapons or starting to train, you must be certain to abide by the most important rule of all: obey the laws and regulations governing weapons and fighting in the place where you are. Different settlements and government-administered zones have different rules. It is your responsibility to learn what the law is where you live and to adhere to it in every detail. These laws and regulations have been imposed for a reason, and we are not in a position to understand the nuance of any situation you may find yourself in. Obey the laws where you are. It is the support of the human community you live in that will keep you safe.

It is also true that most of us are naturally peaceful people. In the time before the zombies, we would never have armed ourselves or trained to fight. And if you are lucky enough to live on one of the few islands with no zombie incursion, or if you are protected by a militia or guard, you may safely ignore this section of the book.

Few of us are that lucky today. Even so, we advise the lone survivor or even the small settlement to avoid fighting the zombies if at all possible. Clearing your area may be essential – in that case use the approved decoy-and-burn distant kill techniques suggested in Ministry Briefing no. 17: How to Dispatch a Large Horde of Zombies Safely. In all other situations our recommendation is to avoid engaging in combat with zombies; the risk of infection is too great to advise hand-to-hand combat in all but the most perilous situations.

Sadly, as we are all aware by now, it is not always possible to avoid the most perilous situations. The fighting techniques outlined in this section are a last resort, but we live in the darkest of times. You may need to go from room to room to clear an otherwise safe and defensible dwelling place of its unfortunate previous occupants. You may – despite your best efforts – have to fight off a zombie incursion into your home. You may have to dispatch a loved one whom you hoped would recover from the festering bite wound they took from the postman.

Or you may find yourself cornered by a horde while out foraging for supplies or travelling from settlement to settlement. You may be chased by a pack of fast zombies, or you may have taken shelter in a tree overnight only to find it surrounded by zombies in the morning and have to fight your way out. Most of us have experienced some version of at least one of these situations by now. If you’re alive to read this book, it’s because you acted on instinct, grabbed whatever was to hand and smashed until you saw the decaying brain of your undead opponent oozing out of its pulverized skull. You’ve been resourceful and strong – but you’ve also been lucky.
